| union members affected by city of portland layoffs
|

|
AFSCME Local 189's Good and Welfare Committee has been designated as a
transition Contact and Referral source for union members that were affected
by phased layoffs implimented by the City on July 31, 2O09 and ending on
December 31,2009.
The General membership voted to help eligible union members that are
currently unemployed with a one-time donation of $189. to maintain
membership by paying union dues, to buy groceries, or to be used for other
needs as approved by the Good and Welfare Committee.

Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lost his life in Memphis, Tenn., where he had gone to support striking sanitation workers in their fight to get the city to recognize their union, AFSCME Local 1733.
Today, AFSCME is helping to raise the funds to build a memorial to him on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The groundbreaking occurred Nov. 13, 2006, and the dedication is scheduled for 2008.
