The Members:
→ Set their dues.
→ Elect their officers.
→ Decide on their local union structure.
→ Write and amend their local constitution.
→ Elect their negotiators.
→ Decide on their own contract proposals.
→ Decide whether to accept or reject a contract offer.
→ Appoint their Stewards.
→ Make their own decisions on whether to file a grievance and on how to settle them.
AFSCME's constitution contains a Bill of Rights for Union Members. It guarantees freedom of speech, democratic elections and a full accounting of union funds at all levels.
AFSCME guarantees full participation by the members in all the union's decision-making. All members have an equal right to run for office, and to conduct their union business free of employer domination.
No wonder the Washington Post has called AFSCME "a model of democracy and vitality."
